April Awareness Police Checkpoints
This month, the Oxford Police Department is conducting April Awareness, with driver and cyclist safety checkpoints throughout the city, according to a release from the department. Officers will be checking for current licenses, vehicle registrations and buckled seat belts, along with the standard check to ensure drivers aren’t operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Officers also want to promote safer cycling, and to ensure bicyclists are aware of the rules of the road and how to stay safe in mixed road traffic.
The Oxford Police Department investigated 14 wrecks, issued 41 tickets and made seven arrests, on the following charges: possession of less than ounce of marijuana; possession of Schedule 2 drug; possession of alcohol by minor; careless driving, possession of marijuana in motor vehicle, possession of Schedule 2 drug; improper parking, possession of drug paraphernalia; out of jurisdiction warrant served; and no seat belt, suspended driver’s license, no insurance.
Oxford Police also responded to five alarms, four disturbances, three ambulance assists, a fire department assist, two welfare concerns, two civil matters, two code enforcement violations – dumping/littering, occupancy violation, suspicious activity, lost property and a 911 hang-up call.
The University Police Department responded to the following incidents:
Tuesday, April 15
Ambulance needed, suspicious person, traffic assists on Coliseum Drive, vehicle stop, two motor vehicle accidents and running a stop sign.
The Oxford Fire Department responded to the following call Tuesday, April 15:
– Smoke detector malfunction, at 3615 Lyles Drive, at 1:45 p.m.
