Ole Miss' Weisz Ready For The Big Show
The eight-team competition will take place Friday and Saturday, March 14-15. The smallbore competition, taking place on Friday, will be held in the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range on the campus of Murray State University. Saturday’s air rifle competition will take place in the main arena of the CFSB Center.
Weisz, a native of Montana, became the first freshman in the history of the program to qualify for the NCAA Championships, and will compete in air rifle Saturday. She also became the first Rebel freshman to earn All-Conference honors (honorable mention in air rifle).
“It’s really exciting,” Weisz said. “It’s all so surreal. I haven’t quite grasped the fact that I’m in the history books. I can say that it was my goal to make the NCAA Championships, but I never imagined I’d be the first freshman at Ole Miss to do so.”
In her first collegiate season, Weisz led the Rebels in air rifle six times, posting a career high 594 against Memphis, one point from the school record. She finished the regular season with a team-leading average of 586.4.
Weisz hopes to have a good showing her first time competing in the NCAA Championships.
“I really want to prove myself,” Weisz said. “I know I already proved myself by qualifying as a freshman, but I want to show off what I’ve learned throughout the season.”
A total of 48 competitors will compete in the championships, with 40 competitors coming from the team rosters submitted by the eight teams selected. The remaining eight competitors were selected based on the scores submitted from the designated qualifier.
