House Deletes Discrimination Language from Gay Jim Crow
The House has stripped Section 1 from SB 2681, known as both the religious restoration act and gay Jim Crow.
The bill, approved by the House 82-35, would still add the words “In God We Trust” to the State Seal.
The bill now also creates a study committee to determine if language that’s similar to Section 1 can be written without the tarnish of discrimination that made a similar bill in Arizona so controversial. The Arizona bill was vetoed by Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican. SB 2681 will next return to the Senate.
According to the newest amendment, the task force will be comprised of the House and Senate Judiciary en banc Committees. The report is due by Dec. 31. The committee must meet by June 1 and will hold three or more meetings.
All study committee meetings are open to the public and time may be allotted for input from private and public groups.
