Grand Jury Returns Murder Indictments In McClendon, Gary Cases
The February grand jury indicted three men in the murder of Zacharias McClendon, a University of Mississippi MBA student killed Dec. 17, 2013.
The three men, Steven Matthew Wilbanks, 22, of North Carolina; Derick Boone, 23, of Laurel, Miss.; and Joseph Lyons, 20, of Houston, Texas were each charged with one count of murder and one count of grand larceny.
Police found McClendon, 25, dead of a single gunshot would at his home at 20B CR 140 in Lafayette County. According to the indictment, he was shot in the head with a Stevens 16 gauge shotgun. Capital murder is punishable by death or by a lifelong prison sentence in Mississippi.
The grand larceny charge is related to the theft of McClendon’s vehicle, a 2004 Nissan Murano, and three college textbooks: Managerial Accounting, Financial Management with Access Code and Fundamentals of Corporate Finance. The total value was $500 or more. The punishment for grand larceny is a prison sentence of 10 years or less and a fine up to $10,000.
Regis Mister Indictment
In a separate case, Regis Mister was indicted on two counts of capital murder, in the double homicides of Carol Gary and Patrick Gary.
The victims were Mister’s mother and younger brother, and were both shot on Nov. 8, 2013 at their home at 292 South Lamar Blvd.
Carol Gary had recently become principal of Davidson Elementary School in Water Valley. At the time of the murders, Chief Joey East said a handgun was used, but no further information on the weapon was provided in the indictment.
Mister was previously employed by the Yalobusha Sheriff’s Department, but had been recently fired before the murders. Each murder charge is punishable by life in prison.
