After throwing the first perfect game in school history and helping lead the Ole Miss softball team (15-9, 1-2 Southeastern Conference) to a road win over No. 1 Florida, senior pitcher Carly Hummel has been named the SEC Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday. She is the Rebels’ first SEC Pitcher of the Week since Becky Nye won the award Feb. 9, 2009.
“I’m so excited for Carly and our program for this award,” Ole Miss head coach Windy Thees said. “She has persevered through a lot of tough times, and her hard work has really shown up here this season.”
Hummel’s perfect game vs. Utah State is the only perfect game recorded in the SEC this season, and was the fifth no-hit performance in Ole Miss history. The senior from Bakersfield, Calif., followed that performance with a complete game, three-hit shutout at No. 1 Florida, leading the Rebels to their first victory against a top-ranked opponent since 2007, and just their second ever in program history.
Hummel struck out a career-high 12 batters vs. Utah State on a neutral field and then had 12 strikeouts again on the road against Florida in 5-0 and 2-0 victories, respectively. Her shutout at Florida was the first time UF had been shut out in a game since June 2, 2013, and the first time it had been shut out at home since May 20, 2012 vs. USF in the NCAA regionals. It was the first time Florida had been shut out in a regular-season game since April 27, 2012.
Hummel gave up just two runs (both solo home runs) in 13.0 innings on the road at Florida, which entered the weekend averaging 8.23 runs per game. For the week, she held all of her opponents to a cumulative .131 batting average, including a .191 mark against the Gators, which entered the weekend averaging .333.
Hummel threw a team-high 20.0 innings last week, had a team-best ERA of 0.70, struck out a team-high 27 batters and walked just two. She also had the second-most strikeouts in the conference in SEC play throughout the week (15).
