Coming off a five-game sweep at the Red and Blue Classic and riding a seven-game winning streak, the Ole Miss softball team heads west this weekend to play in the San Diego Classic I in San Diego.
“This is our last tournament of the non-conference schedule, and we’re going into this weekend with some momentum,” Ole Miss head coach Windy Thees said. “The competition is going to be tough, but if we continue to pitch well and drive in more runs when we get people on base, we should be in good shape.”
Ole Miss (11-6) enters the weekend after outscoring its opponents 20-5 (1.03 ERA) at the Ole Miss Softball Complex in the Red and Blue Classic, highlighted by a stretch of 25 consecutive innings where the Rebels held their opponents scoreless.
Hosted by San Diego State, Ole Miss is scheduled to play five games between Friday and Sunday at the San Diego Classic I. In addition to playing the Aztecs (Friday, 9:00 p.m. CT), Ole Miss will face BYU (Friday, 6:30 p.m. CT), Fresno State (Saturday, 1:30 p.m. CT), Utah State (Saturday, 6:30 p.m. CT) and Colorado State (Sunday, 11:00 a.m. CT).
Ole Miss senior outfielder RT Cantillo has led the Rebels at the plate. Cantillo paces the Southeastern Conference with 31 assists, and is second in the league with a .525 batting average. The Santa Ana, Calif., native has recorded a hit in 15 of Ole Miss’ 17 games this season, including 10 games with multiple hits. She enters this weekend’s tournament riding a seven-game hitting streak, which is her second longest streak of the year.
Junior third baseman Allison Brown, who hails from Los Alamitos, Calif., went on an 11-game hitting streak earlier this season (Feb. 14-23), which is the third longest streak in program history. Brown is batting .375 this year with a team-high tying 10 RBI.
In the circle, senior pitcher Shelby Jo Fenter (5-1) has been on a tear. Fenter, who has logged 35.1 innings, has a team-best 1.19 ERA and a team-high 42 strikeouts, the seventh most in the SEC.
Fellow senior pitcher Carly Hummel (3-2), a Bakersfield, Calif., native, is coming off a strong week in which she won two games and earned her first two saves of her career with the Rebels. Hummel currently holds a 2.29 ERA in 33.2 innings of work with 31 strikeouts.
