Former Ole Miss basketball player and longtime head coach Robert “Cob” Jarvis, 81, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 18, at his home in Eutaw, Ala. Funeral services are set for Friday 2 p.m. at McMillan Funeral Home in Booneville, Miss.
In his three varsity basketball seasons with Ole Miss, Cob Jarvis established 18 school records while playing for Coach B.L. “Country” Graham and was the first Ole Miss player to gain first team All-SEC basketball recognition twice, as well as the first with All-SEC credentials in both basketball and baseball in 1954.
Jarvis also earned All-District honors in 1953 and 1954 and barely missed leading the SEC in scoring his junior season in 1953, as he finished with a 23.2 average, scoring 557 points in 24 games. His 23.2 average in 1953 still ranks 11th in school history and his 557 points that year overtook the SEC single-season best of 540 points held by Kentucky’s Cliff Hagan. He averaged 19.3 points per game during his three-year varsity career, which ranks eighth-best in Rebel history.
Later Jarvis became the Rebels’ head basketball coach from 1969-76 after serving as top assistant to Eddie Crawford for two years before being named head coach in August of 1968. In eight seasons at the Rebel basketball helm, Jarvis compiled an 87-117 record, and his 1973-74 squad won 15 games, marking the best Rebel record in 14 years and the second-best record in 29 previous seasons.
Jarvis was inducted into the Ole Miss Athletics Hall of Fame in 1988 and was selected to the Ole Miss Men’s Basketball Cellular South All-Century Team in 2009. He was also named SEC Basketball Legend in 2010 and was honored during the 2010 SEC Basketball Tournament.
