Two weeks and 10 games into the 2014 schedule, the Ole Miss softball team will head to Hattiesburg, Miss., on Tuesday for a doubleheader (3 p.m. and 5 p.m. CT) against Southern Miss to open a busy week of games.
The Rebels (4-6) are coming off a 2-3 weekend at the College of Charleston Classic in Charleston, S.C., where they topped Kansas 6-2 and Western Carolina 16-4 (5). Now, with Tuesday’s doubleheader against Southern Miss and the Red and Blue Classic running Friday-Sunday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex, head coach Windy Thees and the Rebels will look to get on a roll.
Ole Miss and Southern Miss split their doubleheader last season in Oxford, with the Golden Eagles taking the first game 7-4 before Ole Miss came back to win the second game 3-0. Then-senior Erinn Jayjohn threw a complete game shutout in the doubleheader’s second game, striking out five batters and allowing seven hits and one walk. Marina Parra recorded two RBI and RT Cantillo also batted in a run.
Cantillo currently leads Ole Miss with a .500 batting average, and is tied for fourth in the Southeastern Conference in that category. The Santa Ana, Calif., native also leads the team in slugging percentage (.531) and on base percentage (.568).
In the circle, senior pitcher Shelby Jo Fenter (2-1) has thrown a team-high 19.1 innings, and has a team-best 0.72 ERA, which is 11th in the conference, and has a team-high 22 strikeouts.
Junior third baseman Allison Brown led Ole Miss last weekend at the College of Charleston Classic with a team-high batting average of .563 (9-16). Brown tied a pair of program single-game records Saturday night vs. Western Carolina when she notched four hits and four runs on her 4-4 night that also included two RBI. Senior first baseman Londen Ladner had a team-high nine RBI at the tournament, highlighted by a grand slam vs. WCU, and Fenter allowed just one earned run in 11.0 innings of work with 11 strikeouts.
