The No. 12 ranked Ole Miss rifle team used great performances from senior Melissa Quartarone in smallbore and freshman Alison Weisz in air rifle on their way to a season-high aggregate to edge No. 9 Memphis 4646-4645 here Wednesday at the Rangemaster.
Closing in on the final weeks of the regular season, the Rebels were seeking to post another good score in their quest to earn an NCAA bid.  Beating a Memphis squad, who had just knocked off No. 4 Jacksonville State, was the cherry on top of the ice cream.
Quartarone fired a 585 in smallbore, one off her career-high, to lead the Rebels to a 2295 in smallbore. Memphis, led by Dan Hermsmeier’s 580, totaled a 2300 to take a five point lead into air rifle.
Weisz came up big for Ole Miss in air, shooting the top score of the day, a 594, one off the school record, to pace the Rebels to a 2351.  Memphis had a pair of 593s, but it was enough as the Tigers finished with a 2345 in air. Seniors Abbey Stanec and Rena Goodwin aided the cause with a 588 and 587, respectively.
“The team has come a long way since the beginning of the season, but we still have miles to go,” head coach Valerie Boothe said. “Getting a score that would count towards our qualifying for NCAAs was our number one priority today. Getting the win was the just the icing on the cake. We couldn’t have done it without Melissa’s smallbore and Ali’s air. We hope to keep the momentum going for this weekend against Navy.”
The Rebels welcome Navy to the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center Saturday.  The match will begin at 8 a.m. and go all day, so fans are encouraged to check out the squad before heading over to Tad Smith Coliseum for the men’s basketball game.  Admission is free, and fans can receive two Rebel Rewards points.
