Rebel Netters Add Ricardo Jorge To Team
First Player From Portugal To Join The Program
OXFORD, Miss. – The Ole Miss men’s tennis team, ranked No. 10 nationally, added another talented player to the program with the arrival of Portugal’s Ricardo Jorge, head coach Billy Chadwick announced Friday. The first player from Portugal to join the Rebels, Jorge will be eligible to begin playing in 2015.
“We are excited to have Ricardo join our program,” head coach Billy Chadwick said. “His hard-court game is well suited for collegiate tennis, and he has the potential to be a standout in the SEC and beyond.”
Jorge achieved a career-high ranking of No. 1 in juniors and No. 11 in the Men’s Rankings in Portugal. He owns two ATP points and is ranked 1481. Jorge was a singles finalist at the Portugal National Championships Under-18 and has won multiple ITF singles and doubles titles on the junior circuit. He is also a two-time men’s doubles finalist at the Portugal Championships and winner of a men’s open tournament.
“He is an excellent student and a very hard worker,” associate head coach Toby Hansson said. “He will play a big role in our tennis program’s future.”
Ole Miss will host the ITA Kickoff this weekend at the Gillom Sports Center. The Rebels face No. 26 Michigan in the first round Saturday at 10 a.m. The field also includes No. 22 Illinois and No.25 Clemson. The winners will meet Sunday at 1 p.m. for a spot in the ITA National Team Indoor Feb. 14-17 in Houston, Texas.
