19. Memories of the ’83 Egg Bowl, Immaculate Deflection
On November 19, 1983, the Rebels secured an Egg Bowl victory, quite literally, by an act of God.
With just 24 seconds left in the game, the Bulldogs of Mississippi State were down by by a single point. Freshman kicker Artie Cosby set up for a 27-yard game winning field goal attempt. Cosby kicked it straight and long. It appeared it would clear the cross bar. On its way to a certain Bulldog victory, a 40 mph gust of wind stopped the ball mid-air, just inches from the uprights. The ball fell short of the goal post and secured a 24-23 Rebel victory.
So, Happy 30th Anniversary, Rebel fans! Hotty Toddy!

I just tweeted Bill King on the XM radio this morning about this because he was asking all his guests if they should call what happened in the AU/UGA game the immaculate deflection…had to tell him that name was already taken.
