Oxford Faces Picayune for 5A State Championship

The Oxford Chargers will face the Picayune Maroon Tide in Jackson, Miss. on Saturday night at 7:30 for the class 5A State Championship.

Oxford has been on a roll this season coming into the game on a 14-game winning streak. The Charger’s defeated Callaway by a score of 23-7 to win the north region and punch their ticket to the finals for the first time in 10 years.

In the victory last Friday night, the defense stood strong by only allowing Callaway a single touchdown after special teams miss queue and the ball was run back to the Chargers five-yard line. Going into the game, Callaway’s offense was averaging 50 or more points per game.

The Chargers are led on offense by sophomore quarterback Jack Abraham, who has thrown for a total of 3,310 yards with 36 passing touchdowns on the season.

Picayune (11-2) defeated Laurel 35-28 to pick up their seventh straight win in a row and won the south region.  The Maroon Tide where led by Preston Dedeaux, who picked up 150 yards on the ground against Laurel.

As a team, Picayune averages 86.4 receiving yards per game and rushing the ball 348.2 yards per game. While Oxford’s airy attack averages 245.6 yards per game, runs the ball 185.7 yards per game, and has a total of 72 touchdowns on the year.

For fans that are not planning on making the trip down to the state capital can watch all the action on the Mississippi Public Broadcasting station, Channel 18 in the Oxford area.
