Newton Leads Ole Miss in Mercedes-Benz Final Round

Sophomore was 5-over over at 36-hole tournament

Sophomore Abby Newton carded a 3-over 74 in final around action at the Mercedes-Benz Championship to lead the Ole Miss women’s golf team to a 15th place finish on Sunday (Sept. 22). Newton was 5-over through the 36-hole tournament, which was shortened by around due to rain on Saturday.

Alison Hovatter rebounded from a 7-over 77 round in opening round action to post a 5-over 76 in the final round, including a crucial birdie on hole 15 as she closed out the round. In all, the Rebels tallied seven birdies on the round, with freshman Maria Toennessen carding a team-best three birdies on the front nine, including back-to-back birdies on holes seven and eight.

Toennessen closed out her first collegiate tournament with a round a 78, 7-over par, and finished tied for 54th place. Hovatter closed tournament action in 64th place, jumping up seven spots from her opening round score in the final round.

The Rebels posted a final round score of 309, giving them a two-day score of 609 which was 35-over par and placed them in 15th place.  In all, just six stokes separated 10th – 17th place in the field.

Taelor Rubin closed the weekend with a score of 155 after shooting a 10-over par 81 in the final round while Stani Schiavone shot an 11-over par to closed tournament action in 81st place.

Arkansas claimed the tournament title with a two-day score of 563, which was 5-under par. The Razorbacks were the lone team to in the field to shoot under par. Emily Tubert took medalist honors with a round of 3-under 68 placing her at 5-under for the tournament.

The Rebels will take some time off before heading to the UNC Tar Heel Invitational Oct. 11-13 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
