Groving Most Unusual
As the Ole Miss football season draws near, Rebel fans are making their usual plans to gather in the Grove.
But for Ray and Wendy Meifert, who will be meeting their daughter Dori, a junior University of Mississippi theater major, for the first home game against Southeast Missouri on Sept. 7, the Grove experience is shaping up to be a tailgating visit most unusual.
The Meiferts, who have attended Ole Miss home games previously, will be bringing 50 of their friends to tailgate with them and experience the hallowed grounds of the Grove for the first time. Their group includes people from all over the country and indeed the world, with most of them hailing from the Minneapolis, St. Paul, Denver and Iowa , and some from as far away as Europe.
“Our friends who will be joining us are friends that we have met over the years at different social events or either went to school with my wife,” Meifert said.
Set to arrive in Oxford on Thursday, Sept. 5, the group has a great itinerary planned that includes seeing the town prior to spending Saturday in the Grove.
Among other stops, they will be touring Rowan Oak, paying a visit to the Ole Miss Museum and the campus, and making a must stop at St. Peter’s Cemetery to snap a picture by William Faulkner’s grave, Meifert said.
