Morris Tees Off At U.S. Amateur
BROOKLINE, Mass. – Ole Miss sophomore Blake Morris fired an opening round 3-over par 73 on day one of the 113th U.S. Amateur Championships at the Brookline Country Club on Monday.
The Waterbury, Conn., native carded three birdies in the first round at Nos. 5, 12 and 18, but shot an eight on the par-3 ninth hole to finish the day with a 3-over 73. He is currently tied for 86th overall heading into tomorrow’s second round. The top 64 after tomorrow’s second round advance to match play beginning on Wednesday.
This is the second-straight year Morris has qualified for the nation’s top amateur tournament. He just missed the cut last year after carding back-to-back rounds of 72 at the Cherry Hills Village Country Club near Denver, Colo.
Sponsored by the U.S. Golf Association, the 113th U.S. Amateur teed off on Monday at the Brookline Country Club in Brookline, Mass. The 6,635 yard, par-70 course has hosted numerous prestigious events over the years including the 1999 Ryder Cup and 1913 U.S. Open.
