MDOT Plans to Recreate Oxford Intersections
The Mississippi Department of Transportation has released its potential plans to replace the interchanges of State Route 6 with Jackson Avenue and Old Taylor Road. MDOT recently held two open forum public meetings regarding the planned projects, and now has released the proposals for public viewing and input.
“The public is encouraged to voice their opinions by contacting the Mississippi Department of Transportation,” MDOT announced.
Regarding the interchanges of State Route 6 and Jackson Avenue, a continuous flow interchange was proposed to replace the existing interchange. A continuous flow interchange (CFI) is an at-grade intersection that provides for increased traffic flows by moving the turning vehicles out of the main intersection. For example, a CFI will move a left turn down the road several hundred feet to eliminate waiting for a safe left-turn across oncoming traffic. as compared to a typical intersection design.
The CFI project plans can be viewed here:

The MDOT plans concerning State Route 6 and Old Taylor Road include reconstructing the SR 6/Old Taylor Road interchange with roundabouts where the ramps tie into Old Taylor Road, similar to the interchange at State Route 6 and South Lamar Boulevard, except the roundabouts would be two lanes in width instead of one. The modified interchange would also include a four-lane bridge.
“The improved interchange configurations would reduce delays within the interchange, increase safety and provide a better facility for bikers and pedestrians,” MDOT stated.
A simulation of the two-lane roundabout concept for the interchange at State Route 6 and Old Taylor Road is available below:
