Plein Air: Painting the Mississippi Landscape
Southside features landscape paintings curated by Philip R. Jackson.
A collection of plein air landscape paintings will be on display at Southside Gallery from June 4 through July 7, with an artists’ reception scheduled for Thursday, June 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Local artist and University of Mississippi painting professor Philip R. Jackson will select paintings by UM students who participated in his intensive Summer plein air painting course to be included in the exhibition. The exhibition will also feature paintings by visiting artist, Brian Rego, and an alumnus of the UM Art Department, Martin Arnold.
“It’s exciting to have an opportunity to exhibit works by Philip’s students,” says Southside Gallery Director, Wil Cook. “This exhibition is a great occasion for emerging artists to receive some exposure, and for Southside visitors to see how well the UM Art Department is developing the talent of its students. We’re also pleased to be able to display some of Brian’s paintings. I think his work will resonate with the local arts community.”
Rego currently teaches drawing and painting at The University of South Carolina and Benedict College. He is the founder of the Perceptual Painters Collective, an artists’ group that will be featured in an exhibition at Southside Gallery this September. Rego has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions, nationally and internationally.
