Westboro Church Plans Oxford Protest
Members of the Westboro Baptist Church are set to appear in Oxford on Saturday to protest the University of Mississippi.
The Kansas-based denomination, known for their public protests against homosexuality, military funerals and “all form of sin,” has been approved for an assembly permit at the intersection of Jackson Ave West and Hathorn Road, according to the Oxford Police Department.
WBC announced their appearance in early May as a “time to bring some sanity and truth to Mississippi Rebels.” The church believes Ole Miss fans worship false idols such as football and the movie, The Blind Side.
“We will be watching for them, and we hope that if they show up, they will conduct their protest and then move on,” said Ole Miss Chief of Police Calvin Sellers.
The Oxford protest follows the church’s Graceland appearance in Memphis where the Westboro members picketed the former home of Elvis Presley, whom they claim to be another false idol and a “lecherous, adulterous, pervert and drug addict.”
Once Oxford’s Saturday assembly expires, the group plans to visit the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala. proclaiming, “God smacked you with his whirlwind”– in reference to the tornado that killed 36 people in April 2011.
“They are scheduled to be at the University of Alabama around noon on Saturday, so that doesn’t give them much of a window to protest here,” said Sellers.
The group considers the tragedy in Alabama a “fair warning” from God declaring, “God’s fury is pouring out on your filthy campuses that stink of idolatrous fornicating worthless scum of society.”
