The No. 13 Ole Miss Rebels opened the 2013 season off with a bang with a 1-0 win over No. 12 Texas Christian University.
The pitchers of both teams were locked and ready to go for opening day. The Rebel junior right-handed Bobby Wahl went strong for 6.1 innings pitched with no runs given up. Wahl had faced 25 batters with eight strike outs with three walks and three hits.
Wahl’s opposing pitcher, sophomore left-handed Brandon Finnegan, completed 6 innings worked giving up one run on five hits, two walks with four strike outs facing 25 batters.
After the game, Coach Mike Bianco commented on the atmosphere of the game and the outstanding performance the two pitchers brought to it.
“It looked like a Friday night in the SEC tonight. We had two aces really battling it out. Bobby (Wahl) was sensational tonight. (Brandon) Finnegan really matched him pitch for pitch. He’s a tough guy to face to start the season. We were able to manufacture a run. Sikes (Orvis) had a great at bat and base running. I’m proud of (Brett) Huber for hanging in there. You come out there to save the game, and you throw the ball in the strike zone like you’re supposed to. He shows why he is the all-time saves leader.” Bianco said.
The Rebels lone run came in the fifth inning off of a suicide squeeze bunt by sophomore Will Jamison to score Sikes Orvis.
Brett Huber became the Ole Miss all-time saves leader with his save tonight giving him his 27th collegiate save. The save came on a runner interference double play in the top of the ninth to end the game.
The Rebels and the Horned Frogs will meet on the diamond again tomorrow at 1:30 for the second game of the three-game series.
