Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze seeks quality kids to join the program he is building, young men who lead by example off the field, just like Freeze.
One such student-athlete the Rebels landed on National Signing Day 2013 is quarterback Devante Kincade from Skyline High School in Dallas, Texas.
Kincade, a 4-star recruit and dual-option threat tabbed as the 12th best quarterback per ESPN, is unquestionably a tremendous talent both through the air and on the ground. During his senior year, the elite Texas athlete passed for 2,856 yards and 38 touchdowns. Additionally, he rushed for 861 yards and another 12 touchdowns, combining for an astounding 50 touchdowns in his final high school season.
On-the-field accolades are certainly worthy of high praise, but lofty achievements away from the gridiron for rising college stars are often few and far between. However, by signing Kincade on February 6, Freeze hauled in a player that has already set himself apart as both an athlete and an individual.
When faxing his national letter of intent to Ole Miss on national signing day, the talented quarterback did something very rare for a high school senior: attached a personal letter to the entire Rebel coaching staff.
The letter, originally posted on Skyline’s Twitter account, speaks for itself:
Today is National signing day and as the quarterback of this class, I feel like I have to lead by example. Today I commit to lead in practice, on and off the field, in the classroom and in everything I do as a Rebel. I will give my best at all times as a student and as the quarterback by studying the playbook, executing the offense, and doing all I can to get us to Atlanta and securing the National Championship. God has blessed me to be the QB for the best recruiting class in Ole Miss History. I do not take that lightly.

Today February 6th is when it starts, by getting up earlier than I have to be the first one to send in my National letter of Intent! I am an Ole Miss Rebel and by the grace of God, I can do all things through him who gives me strength! Mr. Switchblade DPK let us go to work!
Sincerely,
DeVante P. Kincade
Sure, talk is cheap these days. However, I ask how many highly rated football recruits can be remembered for taking such a proactive, unprovoked action? Not very many.
Devante Kincade is exactly the type of young man Hugh Freeze is trying to build the Ole Miss football program around; a kid with a great deal of potential both in the game of football and life.
If Freeze can keep bringing in quality kids on and off the field, the potential at Ole Miss is endless.
