First Mississippi Pulitzer Prize
The first Mississippian to win a Pulitzer Prize was Tennessee Williams. He received the award in 1948 for A Streetcar Named Desire. Williams was awarded a second Pulitzer in 1955 for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Willams won three Tony Awards and three New York Drama Critics’ Awards. In 1980, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
