Catherine Woodyard works to improve the health of Delta communities
OXFORD, Miss. — Catherine Woodyard, a University of Mississippi graduate student in health behavior and health promotion, has been named the Applied Sciences Student of the Month for November.
Woodyard (See related story, “Manna From Heaven”, in HottyToddy.com’s News & Views section), who is on track to graduate May 2013, is completing her dissertation that addresses the individual and community health needs of people in the Mississippi Delta. She is an instructor for the university and a member of several national organizations, such as the Society of Behavioral Medicine and the American Public Health Association.
On winning the award, Woodyard attributes the distinction to her hard work in community health to improve community health and wellness in the Delta.
“It feels really good – humbling, because it’s nice to have recognition for hard work, considering my passion for health and the desire to see change in the health of the population,” Woodyard said.
Woodyard has garnered other awards, such as the Graduate School Dissertation Fellowship, and membership in Who’s Who and Phi Kappa Phi. She was a recipient of the Graduate Student Achievement Award and H. Leon Garrett Award in Health Promotion in 2010.
A graduate of Lakeside High School in Hot Springs, Ark, she is the daughter of JoAnne Oliver and Gary Wright of Oxford and Howard and Betsy Woodyard of Little Rock, Ark.
