More than 700 Confederate dead on Ole Miss campus to be memorialized

OXFORD, Miss. — The University Greys Camp No. 1803, Sons of Confederate Veterans, will hold its 15th annual memorial celebration for Confederate Veterans on Sunday, May 5, at the Confederate Cemetery, located behind Tad Smith Coliseum on the University of Mississippi campus.

A complimentary catfish and barbecue dinner on the grounds will be served beginning at 1 p.m., with the memorial service commencing at 2 p.m. The featured speaker is Rev. James Taylor, of Pittsboro, Miss. All persons interested are invited to attend.

The Confederate Cemetery on the Ole Miss campus contains the graves of more than 700 Southern soldiers, most of whom died of battlefield wounds on the university campus following the Battle of Shiloh in 1862.

Mississippi observed the official state holiday of “Confederate Memorial Day” on Monday, April 27.

For more information on the service, contact University Greys camp commander Larry Mardis at (662)832-4908.
