Celebrating Faulkner With Art by Boyd Saunders in Southside Gallery

Boyd Saunders to exhibit etchings, works on paper at Southside Gallery celebrating William Faulkner’s novel, The Sound and the Fury and novella, Spotted Horses during the month of July.

Oxford, Mississippi – Lauded printmaker, Boyd Saunders, will exhibit a selection of Faulkner related works on paper during the month of July at Southside Gallery.  On display will be a series of eight original etchings illustrating Faulkner’s 1929 novel, The Sound and the Fury, an original serigraph illustration from the 1931 novella, Spotted Horses and a stone lithograph portrait of Faulkner which includes text from his 1949 Nobel Prize acceptance speech.  Spotted Horses, a limited edition book published by the University of South Carolina Press in 1989, featuring illustrations by Saunders will also be for sale.  Loose page proofs from the book will be available as well.

Mr. Saunders grew up on a farm near the small town of Rossville, Tennessee.  He received an MFA degree in Fine Art from the University of Mississippi in 1962.  While in Oxford, Mr. Saunders met Faulkner and became acquainted with his work.  Saunders cites Faulkner as an inspiration for much of his own work.  From 1965 – 2001 Saunders was an art professor at the University of South Carolina.  He is a co-founder and past president of the Southern Graphics Council.  His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.

Dr. Thomas Dewey, an Art History professor at the University of Mississippi, has written extensively about Mr. Saunders and his work.  In the catalogue for an exhibition, Comparisons and Contrasts 1981-1982, Dewey wrote, “…A considerable portion of Saunders work also addresses the land and a sense of place.  It is done with a combination of objectivity and myth which is a Southern viewpoint and maybe a birthright.”
