The Oxford Charger football team opens up the 2017 regular season on Friday night against the Vicksburg Gators. This will be the Chargers’ first game as a member of the 6A classification. Both teams will be traveling to a neutral field site to take part in the annual “Red Carpet Bowl” at Warren Central High School.
The Red Carpet Bowl is an event hosted by Vicksburg and Warren Central to start every season. Kick off for Oxford’s game will be Friday night at 5:30 p.m.

“Our guys are excited to get on the field and show what the 2017 team is all about,” Oxford head football coach Chris Cutcliffe said. “They have put in a lot of work, really dating back to December and January. It’s really an opportunity to get on the field when it counts and show what their hard work has been about.”
Last Friday night, the Chargers took part in the annual jamboree on the campus of Oxford Middle School. The scrimmage ended with Coach Cutcliffe’s squad defeating Charleston by a score of 14-0 as Oxford’s defense shined.
“Our defense played phenomenally in the jamboree and we hope to continue on that track,” Cutcliffe said. “Offensively we got going towards the end of the first half of the jamboree, I think we have got something there and I think you’ll see some improvements Friday night.”
Vicksburg comes into this season looking to build on last year’s 9-4 overall record thanks in large part to the play of the team’s upper-class men.
“Vicksburg has a big senior class bunch of good players and that starts with their quarterback, I think he is a great player,” Cutcliffe said. “They have a lot of team speed, then there is certainly the element of the unknown. They have a new head coach and defensive coordinator; a little bit of an unknown factor there when you are playing someone for the first game of the season.
The Charger players recently selected four of their teammates as team captians for the 2017 season, all of which are seniors. The players nominated are; LB Quentin Wilfawn, DB C.J. Terrell, RB Hiram Wadlington Jr. and WR Jaqaun Webb.
“I think it says a lot when your teammates select you as a captain,” Cutcliffe said. “I think it is a great honor; In my opinion, the biggest honor that you can have in a team sport.”
