sports round up -01HottyToddy.com provides readers a roundup of the commentary and information about the Ole Miss Rebels from various publications around the Web.

Readers can check out the latest information in a single post each day throughout the year. Here at HottyToddy.com, we are doing all the leg work to find the information that people want about Ole Miss sports.

Today’s stories come from Saturday Down South.com,OleHottyToddy.com and Ole Miss Sports Information

Ole Miss is 1-2 but has earned the national respect it’s getting

Alabama’s quarterback Jalen Hurts takes a high snap as Jonah Williams (73) provides protection against Marquis Haynes at Vaught-Hemmingway stadium Saturday during the Ole Miss v Alabama.

Ole Miss is setting all the wrong records. The Rebels have had two of the most deflating games in the three-week old football season, squandering a 22-point lead against No. 4 Florida State and a 21-point lead against No. 1 Alabama.

That is the first time a Power 5 team has managed to pull that feat off in the past 10 years.

Ole Miss started the season as the No. 11 team in the country. After the debacle in Orlando, the Rebels fell to No. 19 in the AP Top 25. After Saturday’s collapse against the Crimson Tide, leaving Ole Miss’ lone win thus far in 2016 against Wofford, many expected the Rebels to fall right out of the Top 25.

Ole Miss Football: Four Season Stats That Stand Out

The Ole Miss Rebels have started the season 1-2 during the first three games of the year. A look at some the their stats can paint a clearer picture of the season.

The 2016 year has not started out the way Coach Hugh Freeze and the Ole Miss Rebels would have liked. After tough losses to Florida State and Alabama, the football team has not looked like the same team that finished 2015 with a Sugar Bowl victory. Injuries to key areas of the team has taken its toll. Although stats never tell the entire story, you can notice areas of concern and areas of strength.

The Ole Miss basketball team is now a Nike Elite program, which carries with it many advantages and disadvantages.

The Ole Miss basketball program is trying to make its way into the modern-day NCAA basketball discussion. The athletic association has proven that they are willing to put in the money and time needed for that to happen.

With The Pavilion being opened last season, the basketball program is on the rise in the national spotlight.

The Ole Miss rifle team, ranked No. 15 in the nation in the preseason Collegiate Rifles Coaches Association (CRCA) poll, opens the season Wednesday hosting the Ole Miss Open.

This will be the first competition by the Rebels under new head coach Marsha Beasley. The 2016 team includes three newcomers, four sophomores, two juniors and the solo senior and All-American, Alison Weisz.

The Rebels will get to open the 2016 season from the comfort of their home tomorrow at The Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center as freshman Jillian Tyler competes in the Ole Miss Open against Memphis. The rest of the squad will compete at home Sept. 25, Oct. 1, and Oct. 2. Tomorrow’s action will begin at 12 p.m., but will be going on all day.

Promotions

Admission is free and fans will get 20 Rebel Rewards points.

Notable Returnees
The team will be led this year by senior Alison Weisz (Belgrade, Montana). In 2015 Weisz earned second team All-American honors becoming the fifth All-American in program history. For the third consecutive year and second time in air rifle Weisz qualified for the NCAA Championships taking home a bronze medal. Weisz took third in air rifle at the GARC Championships with a school-record tying and career-high 595.

Another player to look out for is junior Jessica Haig (Constableville, New York). Haig finished second on the team in air rifle with a season average of 586.7 and second on the ream in smallbore with a season average of 570.5. Haig finished last season with a career-high in air rifle (594) and career-best 1170 aggregate at the GARC Championships.

Notable Newcomers
The Rebels welcomed three newcomers to the team this year, including the first freshman to compete tomorrow, Jillian Tyler (Honolulu, Hawaii). Although she may be new to the team, she is someone the coaches expect to contribute. Prior to Ole Miss, Tyler earned more than 70 shooting medals throughout high school and placed second in the Mississippi State precision Junior Olympic qualifier in 2015. Tyler served as a captain when she led her team to four state air rifle championships and finished first in kneeling and prone in the 2016 state championship match.

Talking with new head coach Marsha Beasley

“I’m hoping I can influence the program. And with Hannah’s (Black) help and everybody’s help, we can be better. I want to get away from focusing on outcome and how are we ranked, how are we preforming and winning and losing, and keep the focus on improvement. We want to be better athletes, better team members, better every way we can.”

Rebels Climb To First Place At The Grove

Three Rebels found the top-five to propel the Ole Miss men’s golf team to first place at the FAMC Intercollegiate at The Grove Monday.

Sophomore Braden Thornberry and junior Kerry Sweeney combined for seven birdies and only one bogie to post a pair of 3-under par 69s, the second-lowest scores of the tournament through two rounds. Thornberry moved into sole possession of the lead thanks to his tournament-high eight birides, and looks for his third career medalist honors. Sweeney climbed 26 sports up the leaderboard into tie for fifth place. The Melbourne, Florida native is tied for first in the field on par-5s at 4-under.

“I was extremely impressed with our teams performance today,” said Ole Miss head coach Chris Malloy. “We had three guys go out and lead the way and really set the tone for the day. Anytime that you have three guys in the top five of the individual standings you are going to be in good shape as a team. I know that they are looking forward to getting out there tomorrow and picking up where they left off today.”

Senior Ben Wolcott continued his consistent play with a 1-under par 71 in the second round. The Dickson, Tennessee native is tied for fourth with Sweeney and is seeking his 15th top-20 finish of his career. He leads the field on scores on par-4s at 4-under.

Ole Miss combined for a 2-under par 286, the lowest score of the tournament through two rounds and the only combined score under par. The Rebels lead second-place College of Charleston by two strokes and are ahead of four ranked teams, including No. 3 Georgia and No. 40 North Carolina State.

Freshman Brody Blackmon is tied for 57th at 8-over 152, while sophomore Josh Seiple is tied for 71st place. Senior Noah West is 10-over through two rounds and tied for 66th.

The Rebels will tee off the final round Monday at 12:30p.m. CST. Fans can follow live stats by downloading the Ole Miss Athletics mobile app or at the Golfstat website.
