Live Demonstrations To Show Excitement Of Joining Boy Scouts
Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of the Chicksa District will host a scouting adventure for the Oxford community August 7 at the Old Armory Pavilion.
The Chicksa District, which serves Benton, Lafayette, Marshall and Yalobusha counties, will have scouts from several local units, adult leaders and district executives on hand from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
Julie Chambers, Chicksa District Executive, said the event will show the public what scouting is today.
“We’ll be doing a scout demonstration, some camping demonstrations, flag ceremonies and have some camp cooking,” Chambers said. “We are going to have some of the training that we do for the kids. Specifically, we’re going to take the kids through what you would do to get your safety using knives and axes.”
Chambers said there would also be fun shops and archery set up at the Pavilion. But most importantly, they would have information available for all sorts of aspects of scouting. For example, attendees will be able to find information about each scout unit in the Chicksa District, signup for the fall and activities that the Yocona Council will provide for scouts.
“We want to educate the public about what scouting is and kick off our recruitment season,” Chambers said.
Chambers said that while Eagle Scouts do service projects in the community, younger scouts also have requirements for service projects throughout the community.
“If you have an idea of something that you could use help with, stop by and let us know,” Chambers said.
Expecting to see at least 50 to 100 people come out, Chambers said, “We’d love to have the whole community come out. I’m truly excited about the things that we’re going to do.”
Mitchell Diggs, scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 146, said this Sunday afternoon will be quite the adventure, and he hopes several more kids get involved with the Chicksa District.
“Scouting gives boys a taste of a whole world of possibilities and helps turn young men into leaders,” Diggs said. “Come out Sunday afternoon and start your own journey to the future.”
