Oxford Charger Coach Jason Russell Named 2016 Powerlifting Coach of the Year
Oxford’s head powerlifting coach ranks at the top of his class: Oxford Powerlifting Coach Jason Russell is the Mississippi Association of Coaches 2016 Powerlifting Coach of the Year.
The award, which is voted on by committee, honors one coach each year for his or her performance in MHSAA powerlifting. Russell—who is in his ninth season as head coach of the Oxford Charger Powerlifting Program—received the award after the school’s powerlifting team won their fourth consecutive 5A state championship title this year.
In 2011, Russell led the Chargers to the Region 1 5A championship, the first championship of any kind for the Oxford Charger Powerlifting Program. From there, the successful momentum built for the Chargers as the team repeated its reign as regional champions the following season. Soon after, the Chargers sweetened their success with a win as the school’s first 5A North-Half Powerlifting Championship in 2012.
In 2013, the Chargers won the regional title, north-half championship title and then took the winning a step further by clinching the school’s first-ever state powerlifting championship. In 2016, the Oxford Charger Powerlifting Team won its fourth consecutive state championship title as the MHSAA 5A State Powerlifting Champions. The boys’ powerlifting team has won 14 separate championships under Russell’s direction: four 5A State Championships, five 5A North-Half Championships, and five Region 1 5A Championships. The girls’ powerlifting team, who Russell also oversees, has won four Class III Region I Championships.
Russell’s coaching extends beyond powerlifting: he also coaches for the Oxford Charger Football Program as the varsity offensive line coach. During his time in the offensive line coaching position, Oxford has reached the playoffs seven times and won three 5A North-Half Championships. From 2010-2015, Russell was the Chargers’ ninth-grade head football coach with a combined record of 38-7.
