There was a flutter of different flags around the Oxford Square and historic district this morning after the Oxford Mayor and Board of Aldermen voted to remove the Mississippi flag from all city propety.
At City Hall’s former visitor and senior’s center were three flags: United States Fag, Arbor Flag and black POW/MIA flag.
Across the street on the Courthouse lawn the Mississippi flag was flying while next door, at Neilson’s Department story, the former Mississippi “magnolia flag” waved beside the flag of the United States.
The “magnolia flag” was briefly adopted by the “independent country” of Mississippi after the state left the Union and before joining the Confederacy.
Going West on Jackson Avenue, the County jail was flying the United States flag and the Mississippi flag. Sheriff Buddy East said “we will continue to fly the flag of the United States and Mississippi flag until instructed otherwise by the Board of Supervisors.”
Holding neutral ground and with full support of citizens, returning students, parents and alumni, was the red and blue Ole Miss flag proudly being displayed at the Corner Bar.
Response to action by the City got mixed reviews as some asked what the County would do while others asked about the future status of the Confederate Memorial statue that stands on the south side of the Courthouse.
